WhatsaWidget?
Widgets are nifty little functions that you can easily add and remove from your sidebar.
With an installed version or WordPress there are dozens of widgets to chose, upload to your site and use. With a WordPress hosted blog you have a much more limited selection.
Here’s the list of widgets currently available. BOLDED widgets are essential.

Pages - Your blog’s WordPress Pages
Calendar – A calendar of your blog’s posts
Archives – A monthly archive of your blog’s posts
Links – Your blogroll
Meta – Log in/out, admin, feed and WordPress links
Search – Include a search box on your blog
Recent Posts – The most recent posts on your blog
Tag Cloud – Your most used tags in cloud format
Categories - A list or dropdown of categories
Text – Arbitrary text or HTML
RSS – Entries from any RSS or Atom feed
Recent Comments – Displays recent comments
Meebo – Meebo is a web-based instant message service that lets users of major IM services chat in a browser window.
Vodpod Videos – Add your favorite videos from hundreds of sites to your blog with the Vodpod widget. If you know the Pod you want to display, type in the URL here.
Box.net file sharing -Box.net provides secure online file storage and sharing functionality. This widget will let you share all your files with your blog visitors directly on your blog page.
Category Cloud – Count sub-categories in parent
Akismet – AntiSpam program, displays the number of spam caught
Blog Stats – Hit counter
Top Clicks – Top Clicks are calculated from 48-72 hours of stats.
Top Posts – Top Posts are calculated from 24-48 hours of stats.
Flickr – Displays your Flickr account’s contents
Platial MapKit – Platial MapKit lets you make Maps with your readers.
Authors – Lists particpating authors in the blog.
