TYPES OF BLOGS
INSTALLED BLOG
This type of blog is hosted by the owner of the blog. The owner (you) may choose to make it a part of your existing site, or it can essentially form the whole site.
- Example of a blog that is a PART of an existing site: www.jeanneeck.com (main site); www.jeanneeck.com/thoughts (installed blog on existing site.
- Example of a blog that is the WHOLE site: www.PearlDistrictExpress.com
Some people like installed blogs because they offer more control over design, they support an existing site’s search engine rankings and they fit under the same domain name as the main site.
The main disadvantage of these types of blogs is that they require you to have your own site first, they can be a little more complicated to manage and you may have to pay for hosting.
HOSTED BLOG
A hosted blog is hosted by the blog software company. These blogs essentially appear in a much larger directory of other blogs hosted by the same company. It’s kind of like living on-campus when you go to college.
- Examples of hosted blogs: this blog and http://jeanneeck.wordpress.com/
Some people prefer hosted blogs because they are a little simpler, you will get some traffic from the directory and they provide an easy, free way to get relevant incoming links to their main site.
DOMAIN NAME:
If you want to have your own domain name for your blog, you have to either choose an installed blog or you can pay the blog company for a domain name.
SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION:
One of the key components of search engine optimization is the ability to create different meta tags for the different pages and posts of your site. At this time, that is only possible with an installed blog.
BLOG PLANNING:
It is always a good idea to start out with a plan for your blog.
